Africa’s innovation is thriving, but global metrics often overlook it. A 2025 study in The Conversation notes that indicators like patent counts favor high-tech economies, ignoring Africa’s grassroots solutions. In Malawi, for instance, farmers use low-cost biogas systems made from plant waste, boosting productivity without formal R&D. Across Africa, informal firms and frugal inventions drive progress, yet they’re rarely counted. The study calls for homegrown metrics to capture these unique innovations. With 25 African countries now having science and tech policies, it’s time to measure innovation on Africa’s terms to fuel job creation and resilience.
